KUCHING: Sarawakian artiste Alena Murang has put Sarawak on the map of the world music scene with her latest award-winning music video “Warrior Spirit”, says Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The state Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister congratulated Alena and her video director Sarah Lois Dorai for picking up the Best Asia and Pacific Music Video award and an honourable mention for Best Costume at the International Music Video Awards in Britain recently.
“Alena and her cousin Sarah have made us proud by putting Sarawak, and Malaysia, on the international music scene, which is very competitive.
“Both have shown to us that Sarawakian artistes are capable of using music and creative filmmaking to showcase our rich Sarawak heritage,” he said in a statement on Monday (July 5).
Released on YouTube on May 27, “Warrior Spirit” was produced by the same team behind Alena’s music video “Midang Midang”, which won the Best Styling award at the Buenos Aires Music Video Festival last year.
Karim said Alena and her team had inspired local youths to follow in their footsteps in the music, creative and filmmaking industry.
He also commended their creativity in taking inspiration from the diverse ethnic cultures, traditional dances and colourful costumes found in Sarawak.
“The music video was wonderfully done and the storyboard was mesmerising, capturing the imagination of viewers on how rich Sarawak is in history, culture, arts and traditions,” he said.
